Kenai has a population of 7000, expanding during the summer with tourists and an active commercial fishing industry. The community is also a major base for the oilfield service industry. Kenai encompasses 34 square miles. The Kenai Police Department was formed in 1969 with only three officers. Seventeen officers, eight dispatchers and support personnel currently staff it. During summer months, two seasonal enforcement officers are hired to accommodate the increase in calls for service.
