First organized in 1965, the Morro Bay Police Department currently consists of the Police Chief, Commander, Support Services Manager, four Sergeants, five Corporals and six Officers, for a total sworn staffing of seventeen. Officers are assigned to a variety of duties such as motorcycle traffic enforcement, DARE Officer, Detectives, Explorer Advisor and Field Evidence Technicians. The Department enjoys a Community Services Volunteer program with approximately thirty involved volunteers and a Police Explorer program for area youth. An active Neighborhood Watch program further promotes community partnership. The Department is highly active in the community and sponsors an annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner, annual Caroling Cop Cars event and participates in all special events.
